From Diapers to Dunks:
As boring headlines go, “Westbrook scores 40” was right up there with “Sun rises in East” during the winter of 2004-2005, but the offensive assault Westbrook provided during his junior year of high school could not be summed up more succinctly. Lawrence Westbrook averaged 26 ppg during his sophomore year at Chandler (Ariz.) High, and would lead the nation in scoring as a junior at 40.1 ppg. He broke the Arizona single-season scoring record that had stood for 41 years, finishing the season with 883 points in 22 games. He scored 40 or more points 14 times and had four 50-point games, with a high of 57. Looking for better competition before graduation, Westbrook moved on to Winchendon Prep School in Massachusetts for his senior season and averaged 18 ppg. Now a junior, Westbrook has provided a constant offensive punch this season with a 20-point performance against Bowling Green, and 17-point performances against North Dakota State and Cornell.
